Improve Your Serve!

Almost every community organization has a vision of improving the culture, the lives of our neighbors or some part of the society. The SLS teams have been involved with many churches and other Peer NGO groups who wish to improve their serve. Because of this, we have become somewhat expert at fostering individual and organizational improvement. We have learned how to Move People Beyond Aspiration to Motivation and to Action. We know well the basic stages of change and how to interact with those seeking assistance at each of the stages.

The first step is a deep understanding of the felt needs and interests of the people Seeking Assistance. In fact, every interaction needs to be a mini-research study. Second is the stage of listening carefully and without interruption to a person’s concerns, pain, complaints and issues. Third, assist the person or family in finding ways to lessen his/her pain and difficulty.

There are specific relationship skills that have been shown over and over to effectively promote the health and welfare as well as the ability of persons to do important problem solving. These can be summarized with the GREW acrostic for Genuineness, Respect, Empathy and Warmth. Since 1974 we have been training peer, paraprofessional and professional helpers in the GREW skills with great results.

Additionally, outcome research since the Fifties has shown the positive power of caring friends and other peers with good relationship skills. In fact, in most cases, peer helpers are as effective as clinically trained helpers. This is why we believe the best way to impact our culture for good is through A Lifetime of Great Relationships.

A Practical Vision for Supporting Parents
and Caregivers

Saturday, September 17, 2011, 02:40pm – 03:35pm

The Village Initiative With Parents Program
Presented by Dr. Gary Sweeten
Hosted by BoxCast Booth at BioEthics Conference

Training to care for families using a comprehensive, holistic
approach that uses The Three T's of modern life: High Touch
(person to person care), High Tech (use of social media, web
teachings by other parents, and video conferencing), and High
Teach (a combination of seminars, best practices, and workshops
on topics selected by parents). Sweeten Life Systems has
completed an in-depth study of the felt needs of parents with
a child who has a special need, and they are busily recruiting
organizations to join in developing specific action steps to offer
the support families say they want.
